What is furoshiki ?

The history of furoshiki dates back to the 8th century. At that time, there was a steam bath in the temple, which was used as a religious practice to purify the body and mind. When taking a bath, furoshiki was placed on the floor and used to wrap the clothes changed. In the 1600s, public baths became popular among the people, and furoshiki was more often used to wrap clothes taken off in public baths to distinguish it from others. It is believed that the name of furoshiki has become popular since this time. After the 1700s, furoshiki has been used for wrapping purpose by travelers and merchants. In the late 1800s, Meiji era, people came to have family names and they began to put a family crest on the furoshiki and use it as a gift wrap.

In this way, the use of furoshiki has undergone various changes. And in recent years, the convenience and eco-friendliness of furoshiki are attracting more and more attention, and it has been used for various purposes in modern life such as fashionable bags, interiors, and gift wrapping.
