Sencha - Sun Rouge from Kagoshima

Sun Rouge is a novel variety of Japanese tea that was registered as a new cultivar in 2011. Its name, which translates to "Sun Rouge," is inspired by the image of lipstick ("rouge") and the way its red buds flourish under the sun ("sun").

The vibrant red color of the tea leaves is a result of intense sunlight and long exposure to it. Because of these specific conditions, Sun Rouge can only be cultivated in tropical regions like Tokunoshima, making it a rare and limited-production tea.

The red color of Sun Rouge is attributed to an anthocyanin called delphinidin. Anthocyanins, a type of polyphenol, are known for their antioxidant properties and potential benefits in reducing eye fatigue. While most teas contain only small amounts of anthocyanins, Sun Rouge is rich in them.

Additionally, Sun Rouge is abundant in catechins, well-known components of green tea that contribute to its bitterness. Catechins offer various health benefits, including antioxidant, antibacterial properties, cholesterol reduction, fat loss, anti-allergic effects, and the ability to regulate blood pressure.

As mentioned above, Sun Rouge has various health benefits, but a little tricky thing is that when brewed as a leaf tea, the astringency is marked. So, we offer this Sun Rouge in a powdered form. Recommended way to drink is to mix with sparkling water for a refreshing and clear taste.
